Working with children

Mental health problems in children and young people are on the increase and have worsened during the recent Covid pandemic. 1 in 6 children under the age of 16 in the UK have a diagnosable mental disorder and many more are experiencing psychological difficulties which are causing distress and having a negative impact on their lives and their families. Half of all mental health problems begin before the age of 15 and research shows positive effects for both hypnosis and CBT in paediatric care. CBT can equip children with the skills needed to understand and cope with their emotions: children and adolescents who can effectively manage their emotions are 60% less likely to develop mental disorders in later life (University of Cambridge, 2011).

I use an integrated approach to help give your child, incorporating traditional CBT and hypnotherapy methods with mindfulness, ACT, coping skills and relaxation techniques, through play, art and storytelling. Using an evidence based approach I can tailor an individual treatment plan to suit each child’s needs and abilities. Your child can listen to our bespoke recorded scripts between sessions helping them to relax, build their confidence and consolidate what we have learnt in session. Try the magical treehouse script to help your child relax today.

Children live in their imaginations and this creates endless opportunities for therapy. By ‘acting as if’ we can change our thoughts feelings and behaviours, hypnotherapy at it’s best is ‘imagination therapy’ and we can work with this to create lasting change for your child. Just imagine a world of how it would be for your child if they were no longer scared of the dark or scary monsters.

What People Are Saying

“My daughter was struggling to sleep by herself, she was becoming anxious and was struggling to settle down at the end of the day. We have had a few sessions with Carole and saw excellent results. My daughter felt completely at ease with Carole and looked forward to each session. The audio recordings to help her fall sleep are fantastic, worked great for me too! She now happily goes to bed by herself. Thank you Carole.”

"I approached Carole to help my 16 year old daughter who was suffering from terrible general anxiety and some very specific fears which were starting to affect her sleep, appetite and schoolwork. Carole gained her trust almost immediately and helped her develop ways to rationalise and reduce them. I would thoroughly recommend Carole to any parent wanting to help their children cope with fear or anxiety."

For children under 16, I always have a parent or main caregiver in the room throughout treatment and liaise with parents outside of sessions to monitor and review progress.

I believe everyone should have access to therapy but appreciate the cost can be prohibitive or worrying. For this reason I provide a limited number of free spaces for teens and young people contact me for more details.
